What is the Bestmed waiting period? It’s something that you may be asking yourself if you wish to join Bestmed medical scheme. Or maybe you have dependents that you wish to add to your scheme, and you are wondering how long they will need to wait before they can get treatment. Whatever your reasons, it’s worth pointing out that Bestmed is one of the biggest medical aid companies that can be found in South Africa. So, how long will you have to wait before you can get treatment?

What is the waiting period for Bestmed?

The Bestmed waiting period is generally 3 months. However, for some conditions, the waiting period can be as high as 12 months. If you are switching from another medical aid provider, or if there are less than 90 days after leaving your previous provider, you may be covered immediately in under the Prescribed Minimum Benefits (PMBs). That’s in terms of the Medical Schemes Act of 1998 (Act No. 131 of 1998).

Why are there waiting periods?

That’s the Bestmed waiting period. But why are there waiting periods when it comes to medical insurance? It’s a question that some people grapple with?

Waiting periods are not there to steal money from you. They are there to protect genuine medial aid customers. There are some people out there who would only join when they fall sick.

That would be tantamount to fraud. Should that be allowed to happen, then the medical aid schemes would get bankrupt quickly. Medical aid works because people who are not sick help pay for those that are ill.

So, if people were allowed to get in and leave at will, that would cause problems. It’s the reason why there are waiting periods.
